'They were the times we'd never forget, if only we could remember...'
In the recesses of our minds and former home in Tallahassee, FL known by locals as the Madhouse, the spot where all freaks could hide and thrive in a world they made alive by their own art and chaos, We the Freaks recorded demo tracks to our second project entitled Dope City. The record button was often pressed late into the night and was fueled by absolute whimsical madness, but this was what the album stood for. Freedom and Darkness. Heartfelt echoes that screamed outwards to the world we so desperately wanted to change.
For the few that have followed us from the Sweet Shop Concerts with former names, Happy Candle Movement and our debut LP Infinite Love in the Endless Grave, this fits right before the latter. The follow up to Happy Candle Movement never took flight because of our own spirals deeper and deeper into the art project and ourselves. 'It was the best of times, it was the worst of times...' but needless to say we made it out alive and tacked on a few more beautiful freaks to properly record Infinite Love.
Yet now, all these years later having transitioned back to our folk roots and beginning to play shows again in Los Angeles, CA, we (Sam & Spencer) thought it necessary to look back one last time and release the realest of the raw recordings from the Dope City sessions.
So with this album we present the life and times of what it was like to be a freak way back when. The time where money meant nothing and art meant everything. Where hope was pushed forwarded by the creeping abyss that resided behind you if you did not create with savagery. All this, captured on film by our long time friend and fellow Freaknik Drew Angle who has always been there to collaborate and capture.
So, here's to all of you new and old, young and proud, fading and loud. Freaks in every word and way to stand up with us and say...
